Thar Skirt

& Jaisalmer

The regions of the Thar Desert are home to some of the world’s most iconic and traditional crafters of folk embroidery. Designs are intricately enhanced with metallic threads, ribbon, shells, sequins, and mirror fragments that are sewn into patterns called Gota Patti. The nomadic people of the desert have long pieced these intricately embroidered patches together from old saris and bridal dresses to produce magnificent patchwork collages. Inspired by this tradition of recycling materials, we've reimagined and worked these techniques into modern silhouettes for you to rock.

Thar Skirt

298.00

The Thar Skirt is an attention grabbing mini made from dozens of antique patches of metallic embroidery called Mukke. These traditional patches were then carefully matched for color and sewn together in quilt-like fashion before their re-birth into a skirt. No two are exactly alike. Fully lined. Cotton and assorted metallic threads. Dry clean only.

& Rakhu Devi

Artisans Kenku Devi, Rakhu Devi, Huva Devi, and Taruna Devi all work on patchwork in a Jaisalmer Collective. They each learned the art of Mukke from their elders when they were just girls. Patterns for this traditional Rajasthani embroidery are passed on through generations within their tribe. They each would have first sewn several intricate pieces of metalic Mukke for their dowry before getting married.

The patches used by our artisans today come from salvaged traditional Rajasthan garments carefully paired and sewn together into a beautiful tapestry of similar colors.
