Lotus Skirt

& Santiniketan

The women of Santiniketan have been sewing layers of recycled saris together to make quilts for centuries. It's a running stitch technique called Kantha and is currently the fashion diktat of the region. In West Bangal, Kantha has been elevated beyond traditional quilts to elaborate embroidery that adorns everything from Khadi cotton to Tussar silk. We hope to expand the reach of Kantha beyond traditional Indian wear by incorporating it into styles more commonly worn on this side of the world.

The Lotus skirt is a stunning, hand-embroidered, midi skirt with hidden pockets. It's lined with a thin layer of tule to add a bit of body and the exposed zipper in the back adds a touch of edge to this feminine form. The detailed Kantha work found on this piece is extremely time consuming and may take an artist up to 6 months to complete 5 yards of fabric between daily family activities. 100% Tussar Silk. Dry clean only.

& Monoyara

Monoyara lives in a small village outside Santiniketan. She learned Kantha stitch from her mother. Today, she is the master artist in her village and spends a lot of time teaching others. She's responsible for the initial design and color selection for the majority of the Kantha work in her village. It's common in these small villages for women to stitch in social circles between their daily activities. It's a way for them to contribute to the family income.

The lotus motif is the most common motif found in Kanthas. This motif is symbolic of cosmic harmony and essential womanhood. The lotus represents the life-giving power of water, and is also associated with the sun for the opening and closing of the petals.
