Maroon & Aqua Khadi Scarf

& Santiniketan

The women of Santiniketan have been sewing layers of recycled saris together to make quilts for centuries. It's a running stitch technique called Kantha and is currently the fashion diktat of the region. In West Bangal, Kantha has been elevated beyond traditional quilts to elaborate embroidery that adorns everything from Khadi cotton to Tussar silk. We hope to expand the reach of Kantha beyond traditional Indian wear by incorporating it into styles more commonly worn on this side of the world.

& Monoyara

Monoyara lives in a small village outside Santiniketan. She learned Kantha stitch from her mother. Today, she is the master artist in her village and spends a lot of time teaching others. She's responsible for the initial design and color selection for the majority of the Kantha work in her village. It's common in these small villages for women to stitch in social circles between their daily activities. It's a way for them to contribute to the family income.

Khadi means hand-woven and hand spun fabric.  Khadi Cotton, the base material of this scarf, is deeply rooted in the Indian culture as its production was a big part of the self-reliant movement initiated by freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi.
