Padma Top

& Santiniketan

The women of Santiniketan have been sewing layers of recycled saris together to make quilts for centuries. It's a running stitch technique called Kantha and is currently the fashion diktat of the region. In West Bangal, Kantha has been elevated beyond traditional quilts to elaborate embroidery that adorns everything from Khadi cotton to Tussar silk. We hope to expand the reach of Kantha beyond traditional Indian wear by incorporating it into styles more commonly worn on this side of the world.

The Padma top is a stunning, hand-embroidered, two-layer, crop. The exposed zipper in the back adds a touch of edge to this intricate feminine piece. The detailed Kantha work found on this garment is extremely time consuming and may take an artist up to 6 months to complete 5 yards of fabric between daily family activities. 100% natural un-dyed Tussar Silk. Dry clean only.

& Paputi

Paputi is a local artisan from a village on the outskirts of Santiniketan. She works on her kantha design in her spare time with support from her husband and predominantly shows her wares at local craft and artisan events.

The floral and vine motif on this top is part of an antique style known as Sujni, which has been passed down from Paputi's mother to her.  The technique is highly intricate and laborious. In previous generations, it was reserved for dowry quilts. Today, women like Paputi stitch the elaborate pattern onto beautiful fabric meant to be worn.
